Endnote

Posted by Helen Burridge on Thursday, April 28, 2011,
Well, I have at long last used Endnote! It took me a whole day starting at 10am and believe it or not I finally put my laptop away just before 2am!  This unit is based on authentic learning experiences and I am one of those people who benefit by 'doing' rather than listening or reading, but I am looking forward to being able to use these technologies more confidently and more inportantly- quickly! As I said, I have now looked into Endnote, but I had to view the video Jenni and Dani made to as...

Interactive white board lesson

Posted by Helen Burridge on Wednesday, April 27, 2011,
Today I actually managed to start on my assignment 2b, the Interactive White Board Lesson. I was so excited to be starting this but as my referencing and technology skills are so underdeveloped ( I know.. that's why I'm here) it has taken me 8 hours to complete!- and I haven't finished the referencing yet! My problem is knowing which part of the site to find the relevent information in. For example, I found an interesting IWB activity- on the Learning Federation website, I clicked on it and h...

Group assignment

Posted by Helen Burridge on Tuesday, April 26, 2011,
I'm not sure if to blog on my group assignment, but I suppose as it's all EDN 113 based this is the best place for it.I have been working for the last couple of day's (and well into the early hours) on our group task, searching for images from Creative Commons that I can use. I have also taken a couple of screen print shots, one in particular is of a book on pollution, which is our topic. As the book is located on the Scholastic website I have sent an email to them asking permission to use th...

Jing!

Posted by Helen Burridge on Monday, April 25, 2011,
On Friday I spent a couple of hour's trying to figure out how to capture a screen shot of an Excel example without it converting to a link. I wanted to see the whole page on my website. I had remembered how to use print screen but each time I used the file widget to instal it, I could only see the link, which wasn't what I wanted at all! So after much screaming and shouting, I logged into Skype and asked for help from my fellow EDN 113's. My prayers were answered and I was told to try Jing to...

Creative Commons licence

Posted by Helen Burridge on Friday, April 22, 2011,
Today I decided to link my site with a Creative Commons licence. I spent a while reading thorough the frequently asked questions. The site held a lot of information and because I wasn't really sure what licence I was looking for, I spent alot of time just reading it! So, I followed the simple steps the site provides for you, for example you can choose to put in informtion about your site- what sort of access you want people to have to your work. If you want them to make changes to it etc. I c...

Smart table

Posted by Helen Burridge on Sunday, April 17, 2011,
I'm afraid I haven't contributed to my blog this week as I've been unwell. Hopefully now I'm on the mend and can catch up with some of my blog entries. Firstly,at the beginning of the week I was asked by a friend of mine, who teaches in a Northern suburb school, if I'd like to have a play around with a new piece of technology her school is trialling. The 'smart table' is an interactive table that multiple users can access at the same time. I have googled it and have already thought of how you...

ipad

Posted by Helen Burridge on Sunday, April 10, 2011,
This weekend I have been given the task of finding applications relevent for SAER students to use with an ipad. I have been searching and have come up with a really good site with lots of free download applications to use in different grades and curriculum areas. http://teachwithyouripad.wikispaces.com/  is the site I've found to have the most educational applications, I thought I'd post it on the discussion board to allow others the chance to view it. The school I work at have purchased five...

Interactive white boards

Posted by Helen Burridge on Saturday, April 9, 2011,
As we are about to lauch into another assignment which will include the use of an interactive whiteboard lesson, I have taken a book out from the library,   Kent,P.2008.Interactive Whiteboards. A practical guide for primary teachers. Macmillian Education Australia. I found this really easy to read and provided example lessons. One example I particularly liked was the use of 'Promethean' in a lesson teaching symetry. A students photo was scanned onto the IWB and a rectangle covered half of the...

Group Discussions

Posted by Helen Burridge on Wednesday, April 6, 2011,
This evening our whole group managed to get together to chat on Skype! I'd collaborated with the others in the group to organise a convienient time to make a conference call. The best laid plans...I felt so frustrated, I felt responsible to ensure this call went well as I had proposed it to the group. I could not figure out how to include all four of us on the conference call. So while I was chatting to two members of the group I googled Skype help, found out why the final member was not able...

Google docs

Posted by Helen Burridge on Monday, April 4, 2011,
Well, I've received my assignment back today- a bit disapointed with myself :( In hindsight, I shouldn't have removed the widgets I'd installed, even though I couldn't add what I wanted to. On reflection, perhaps I need to try to use more simple versions of the widgets. I have to remember this is a learning unit.
On a more positive note, I have successfully created a discussion document on google docs to record our group discussions. I've changed the settings so all members of the group can co...

Skype group

Posted by Helen Burridge on Sunday, April 3, 2011,
I've been reflecting on how I can make the communication between the group members easier? As I said in my earlier blog I find it very frustrating when I have an idea I want to bounce off someone, it takes a few days for the replies to come back. So in a 'light bulb moment' I thought why don't we have a Skype group for our project, that way whenever we're on Skype we can see who else in the group is too. We can also utilise the file share option in Skype for the project. I've invited our tuto...
